We are looking for a dedicated Public Health Officer – Advanced or Public Health Nurse to join our team in an Identified Role. This position is open only to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, as it is essential to achieving the role’s purpose and responsibilities.

About the Role

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and support key programs focused on preventing and managing communicable diseases, including acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease.
  • Use your technical expertise and deep understanding of social, cultural, economic, and geographic factors to shape strategies to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Drive inclusive communication and ensure First Nations voices and cultural perspectives are central to communicable disease program design and delivery.
  • Build strong partnerships with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure programs are culturally appropriate, locally adaptable, effective, and inclusive.

You'll be part of a supportive team within the Communicable Diseases Management Unit, with an initial focus on addressing acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. Over time, you'll have the chance to expand your work to other communicable disease prevention programs.

While the role is ideally based in Herston (Brisbane) or Cairns, we are open to considering other locations for the right applicant.

About You

To succeed in this role, you will:

  • Be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (this is an identified role).
  • Have qualifications and/or experience in public health, nursing, or a related field.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the health needs and cultural diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Have experience in program delivery, stakeholder engagement, and providing expert advice.
  • Be passionate about improving health outcomes and addressing health inequities.
