The Psychologist – Advanced (Court Liaison) provides high level clinical services and leadership within the Court Liaison Team, taking a lead role in assessing cognitive disability and functional capacity for individuals appearing before the Magistrates Court. The position offers expert consultation on complex assessments, supports statewide training, and also undertakes core Court Liaison Officer duties, including identifying, assessing and referring individuals with mental illness or cognitive disability in watch houses and court settings, and advising the Magistrates Court on soundness of mind, fitness for trial and treatment needs.

About the role

The role of the Psychologist – Advanced (Court Liaison) is to provide advanced clinical services and leadership within the Court Liaison Team with responsibility for taking a lead role in the assessment of cognitive disability and functional ability for persons appearing before the Magistrates Court. The position also provides consultation to Court Liaison Officers regarding complex assessments, as well as assisting service training and development on a state-wide basis. The role also fulfils the duties of a Court Liaison Officer, including identification, assessment and appropriate referral of individuals with mental illness and cognitive disability within Police watch-houses and court environment and provision of advice to the Magistrates Court regarding issues of soundness of mind, fitness for trial, and treatment needs.  

About you

Our ideal candidate will be someone who can carry out the following key accountabilities in accordance with the Metro North Health's values:

  • Develop and maintain referral pathways and relationships with external stakeholders particularly including the Department of Communities Child Safety and Disability Services, the National Disability Insurance Agency and relevant non-government organisations.   
  • Utilise a comprehensive understanding of the Magistrates Court and watch house environments, their relationship and impact upon mental health prevalence and presentation.   
  • Liaise with members of the CLS multidisciplinary team, other relevant services including mental health services within other HHS's (e.g. Prison Mental Health Services; Continuity of Care Project Officer) to facilitate treatment and care of clients.   
  • Provide training to internal and external stakeholders of the Court Liaison Service regarding the Mental Health Act 2016, Mental Health presentation and prevalence.
