Clinical Midwife (Lactation Consultant)

About us:

Serving as the major referral hospital for Central Queensland, Rockhampton Hospital delivers a broad range of healthcare services, including emergency care, surgery, mental health, maternity, paediatrics and specialist outpatient clinics.

Our hospital's Maternity Service is the region's primary birthing hub, supporting around 1,400 births each year. Offering a Level 4 Maternity Service alongside a Level 4 Special Care Nursery, the team provides high-quality care for women, babies and families across Central Queensland.

Our service features a Midwifery Group Practice and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Gumma Gundoo model of care, with a strong commitment to culturally safe, woman-centred care delivered in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

About the role:

  • Provide expert lactation and breastfeeding support to women, families, and the wider multidisciplinary healthcare team across maternity services.
  • Deliver personalised care for women experiencing complex feeding challenges through assessments, education, care planning, and outpatient follow-up support for up to six weeks postpartum.
  • Take the lead in supporting Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) accreditation through staff education, training, and ongoing quality initiatives.
  • Share knowledge and clinical guidance with midwifery, nursing, and healthcare staff on evidence-based breastfeeding practices, positioning, feeding techniques, and infant feeding cues.
  • Build strong relationships with community services while maintaining accurate clinical documentation, operational reporting, and professional IBCLC credentials.

About you:

  • Having registration as a Registered Midwife with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with a current annual practicing certificate is essential.
  • Holding a current IBCLC qualified Lactation Consultant certificate and Midwifery prescribing endorsement is highly desirable.
  • You will bring advanced clinical expertise in lactation, infant feeding, and women-centred care, supported by relevant qualifications, contemporary knowledge, and a strong understanding of quality and safety standards.
  • You will demonstrate exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead, educate, support, and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams and with women, families, and stakeholders.

What we offer:

Total remuneration value of up to $86,116 p.a. is comprised of:

  • An hourly rate between $57.48 - $61.55 p.h.
  • 12.75% employer superannuation contribution
  • 17.5% leave loading
