The role

The Registered Midwife (RM) within the Nursing and Midwifery Staffing Team (NMST) provides flexible workforce support across the midwifery service areas within the Townsville Hospital and Health Service. NMST RMs are primarily deployed to manage emergent leave through daily shift‑to‑shift allocations within Midwifery services.

NMST staff are supported through a collaborative model involving Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Services Clinical Nurses and local unit clinical leads.

As integral members of the multidisciplinary maternity care team, RMs contribute to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of care to achieve optimal health outcomes for women, newborns, and families. Care is delivered in alignment with clinical standards, organisational policies, and professional guidelines, ensuring a high standard of practice across diverse maternity and neonatal settings.

Requirements:

  • Qualification: Bachelor of Midwifery or equivalent is a mandatory qualification for this position.
  • Highly Desirable: Demonstrate clinical skills in IV cannulation, water immersion in labour and waterbirth, perineal suturing and speculum examination. If not competent in these skills, must be willing to undertake necessary training during the term of this employment.
  • Shift Availability: This casual position offers opportunities to work across a variety of 24/7 shift types. 
  • Driver Licence: This position requires the applicant to possess an appropriate license to operate a Class C (car) motor vehicle. 
  • Successful applicant will be required to complete Maternity Support Unit mandatory competencies, Examination of the Newborn package and Water Immersion in Labour package.

  • Salary range: $55.07 - $70.64 p.h. (casual rate) (NG5)

The ideal applicant will be someone who has proven ability and can demonstrate the following:

  • In partnership with women, develop individualised care plans for antenatal, postnatal and intrapartum care and provide midwifery care in the hospital and in the community.
  • Provide support, guidance, preceptorship, supervision and mentoring to new and less experienced staff.
  • Apply evidence-based guidelines to achieve positive care outcomes for recipients of health care services and escalate care according to guidelines and protocols.
  • Clearly communicates with the multidisciplinary team, women and their families.
  • An understanding of scope of practice, legislation and professional requirements.
