Tell me more...Supporting Healthier Pregnancies Initiative
This is a statewide-funded role sitting within our maternity services team, with a clear and meaningful focus: helping pregnant women in our region get earlier access to the right care, and making sure the midwives and nurses delivering that care feel confident doing it well.
The Supporting Healthier Pregnancies Initiative (SHPI) is part of Queensland's Putting Queensland Kids First strategy — a significant investment in the first 2,000 days of life, from conception to age five. As our Clinical Midwife Consultant (CMC), you'll be the local driver of that work.
What the role actually involves
You'll be working at the intersection of clinical practice and systems change — not just seeing women, but building the conditions that make better care possible across the service.
That means:
- Embedding evidence-based preventive health practices into routine antenatal care
- Identifying women who need greater support earlier in their pregnancy journey
- Building clinician capability and confidence through education and practice development
- Developing and improving referral pathways to appropriate services
- Contributing to local and statewide evaluation of what's working
The five statewide priorities you'll be working on
The SHPI has identified five focus areas where the evidence is strongest and the opportunity for impact greatest:
- Smoking and vaping — supporting clinicians to routinely assess and assist women to reduce smoking and vaping during pregnancy
- Alcohol — embedding alcohol consumption screening and brief intervention as standard practice in antenatal care
- Nutrition and physical activity — improving early intervention to reduce gestational diabetes risk
- Pregnancy immunisation — improving uptake of recommended immunisations through public antenatal services
- Preventive health as a whole — promoting antenatal care as a genuine opportunity to influence family health across the life course
This isn't a traditional clinical role. It suits a midwife who thinks beyond the individual appointment — someone who can influence systems, build relationships with multidisciplinary teams, and translate policy into practice on the ground.
