About the Team
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a specialised ward for children and young people who are seriously ill or recovering from major surgery. Our services include:
- Specialist care for seriously ill, injured, or ventilated children
- Specialist care for children after complex surgical procedures including heart, brain, kidney and liver transplantation, intestinal and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery
- Specialist care for high dependency patients unsuitable for a ward due to physiological instability, or dependence on specialist technology
- Extra-corporeal life support (ECLS) including Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD)
- Members of the QCH Medical Emergency Team (MET) for inpatient emergency responses, Paediatric Trauma Team and Code ECMO
- Support for regional Level 4 and 5 Children's Intensive Care Services support for referral centres in their capacity to provide initial resuscitation and stabilisation of critically ill children (including education, development of statewide paediatric clinical practice guidelines, telehealth services, retrieval teams, outreach education and review services such as clinical audit and outcome monitoring
- In conjunction with Children's Health Queensland Retrieval Service (CHQRS) the PICU provide the Paediatric Retrieval Service for Queensland and Northern NSW.
About the Role
The position of Director of Paediatric Intensive Care, Division of Critical Care will lead and manage the delivery of world-class tertiary clinical services in the Department of Paediatric Intensive Care at the Queensland Children's Hospital (QCH), into the future whilst supporting the delivery of care of critically ill children across Queensland and Northern New South Wales. The Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic and operational performance of the department and its services. The primary focus of this role is to ensure the department demonstrably and consistently provides the highest quality, safe patient centred care, maximising integration across internal and external services, education and research, whilst maintaining a sound and sustainable financial position, strong staff engagement and support, and effective relationships with, consumers, executive and divisional leadership.
The Director of Paediatric Intensive Care will lead a team with initiative, problem solve, manage and set direction to achieve a world leading paediatric intensive care service. This position requires active, positive and visible leadership to create an environment for clinicians and support staff that promotes clinical excellence, ensuring the finest care for children and young people.
Essential Requirements
You will have a successful track record as a leader at a service level within a tertiary hospital or service.
- Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification in medical degree and fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM), Australia and New Zealand or equivalent, allowing practice as a specialist paediatric intensivist in Australia.
- Appointment to this position is dependent upon written confirmation of a Scope of Clinical Practice (SOCP) from the Executive Director of Medical Services, relevant to the clinical practices of the successful candidate. The candidate will be required to provide appropriately validated documents for credentialing purposes.
- Experience in a major public teaching hospital, including paediatric intensive care, preferably at department/director level and/or demonstrated experience leading and managing high functioning teams.
- Current registration with/or eligible for current registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Formal leadership training is highly desirable.
