The Transition Year (TY) is a mandatory 12-month training period in a CICM-approved unit, designed to bridge the gap between Senior Registrar and Consultant roles. It provides trainees with graded responsibilities in patient care, fostering clinical autonomy while developing skills in education, administration, and research. By the end of the TY, trainees are expected to competently perform the clinical and non-clinical duties of an Intensive Care Specialist, as outlined in CICM Guidelines IC-2.

About the role
The Transition Year (TY) is a mandatory 12-month training period in a CICM-approved unit, designed to bridge the gap between Senior Registrar and Consultant roles. It provides trainees with graded responsibilities in patient care, fostering clinical autonomy while developing skills in education, administration, and research. By the end of the TY, trainees are expected to competently perform the clinical and non-clinical duties of an Intensive Care Specialist, as outlined in CICM Guidelines IC-2.
About you
Our ideal candidate will be someone who can carry out the following key accountabilities in accordance with the Metro North Health's values:
- Provision of clinical care of patients within, or referred to, the ICU. Work in the lead role for one of the ICU pods under the supervision of the ICU Specialist. ICU Specialist will be available for advice at all times. There will be a graded escalation in autonomy and responsibilities over the year at appropriate times as deemed suitable by the supervising specialists.
- TY trainee will manage one of the 3 ICU Pods during the week (under consultant supervision) and be first ‘on call' overnight.
- To be available for advice to the Junior Doctors (interns, RMOs, and Registrars) where necessary in patient's admission, discharge summaries, reviewing results and investigations.
- Ensure continuity of care via appropriate handover procedure in the unit.
