Role details

The Theatre Department at the Mackay Base Hospital is seeking applications for a Clinical Nurse Consultant (Endoscopy & CSSD) to join their team on a permanent basis.

Your opportunity

The Clinical Nurse Consultant is an employee who is a registered nurse who:

  • Is appointed to an advanced practice nursing position; and
  • Demonstrates a specialised clinical expertise and/or specialised skill set.

About the Team

The MHHS Perioperative Department comprises a seven-theatre complex, including one theatre utilised for both surgical and endoscopic procedures, and a dedicated endoscopy theatre. The service operates on a 24/7, 365-day roster and provides a comprehensive range of specialties, including general surgery (with colorectal), urology, ENT, orthopaedics, orthopaedic trauma, trauma, gynaecology, obstetrics, and specialised anaesthetic services.

The Day Surgery Unit is distributed across multiple locations and includes:

  • An endoscopy suite within the theatre complex
  • An open-plan recovery area with eight chairs
  • An Extended Day Surgery Unit with 14 funded beds (Monday to Friday) and 9 beds on weekends, with flexibility to expand to 16 beds as required

The Day Surgery Unit plays a critical role in supporting Mackay Base Hospital in achieving National Elective Surgery Targets (NEST) and delivering a safe and efficient elective surgery pathway for all consumers within the MHHS district, ensuring appropriate preparation and coordination of elective surgical patients.

The Mackay Base Hospital Endoscopy Service operates as a Level 3 service, providing care to patients across low, medium, and high anaesthetic risk categories. The service delivers both elective and emergency procedures, including diagnostic and interventional endoscopy.

The primary purpose of the MBH CSD and endoscope reprocessing unit is to ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant reprocessing of reusable medical devices. (RMDs)/other devices This is in accordance with governing national standards and guidelines - including but not limited to AS/NZS 5369 and GENCA.

By ensuring compliant reprocessing of RMDs, the unit plays a critical role in minimising the risk for patients of hospital acquired infections and supporting clinical services through the consistent provision of sterile, fit-for-purpose equipment. Therefore, underpinning the delivery of high-quality patient care across the health service.
