Join Pathology Queensland's Analytical Chemistry Unit (ACU) and apply your advanced scientific expertise, leadership and specialist knowledge in one of Australia's leading diagnostic laboratories. As a Senior Scientist, you'll perform and oversee a diverse range of highly specialised screening, diagnostic and therapeutic testing, while supporting service excellence, quality and innovation. Experience in next generation sequencing (NGS) and germline variant curation is highly desirable.

The ACU delivers an extensive statewide testing service, including newborn screening, therapeutic drug monitoring, toxicology, trace element analysis, metabolic disease profiling, steroid hormone testing, vitamins, porphyrins and biogenic amine analysis. You'll work with cutting-edge technologies including tandem mass spectrometry, HPLC, UPLC, GC-MS, QTOF, ICP-MS and NGS.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated high level knowledge of chemical pathology tests relevant to the ACU and their role in clinical medicine.
  • Advanced scientific knowledge and clinical skills demonstrated by laboratory experience, professional development activities, post graduate qualifications or other formal certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply scientific judgement to perform, interpret and report biochemical and/or genetic results in a pathology laboratory.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and as part of team to ensure efficient workflow and accurate results.
  • Demonstrated initiative, problem solving skills and innovation within a genetics or biochemical pathology laboratory.
  • Experience with automation and/or liquid handling robots in a pathology laboratory
  • Significant experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas - training, education, quality or troubleshooting in a clinical laboratory.
  • Proven ability to deliver projects within allotted timeframe, be self-driven and participate in professional development
  • Good communication and negotiation skills with staff at all levels in a large organisation.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high level scientific and clinical advice to Senior Laboratory Managers and Pathologists on service delivery, equipment and technology, interpretation & clinical relevance of biochemical and/or genetic results.
