About the Team

As a campus, we focus on integrated, seamless delivery of care, where the whole campus wraps around each young person and there's no wrong door for accessing care. Our role is to help them on their recovery journey, and work collaboratively.

We also take a ‘whole of journey' view of young people and understand their experience within CHQ starts well before we meet them. We partner with our colleagues across CHQ and work together to provide the best care, including knowing when to draw on each other's expertise. Our role is to advocate for the diverse social, emotional and physical wellbeing of all young people, including addressing discrimination of all types and driving the de-stigmatisation of mental health.

Ultimately, we want mental health to be an integral part of healthcare — and an important part of the experience of all CHQ young people. Our staff are a critical ingredient to this story, and we support and empower them to deliver quality care as they themselves flourish.

Children's Health Queensland CYMHS has two mental health inpatient units that provide acute recovery oriented multi-disciplinary assessment and intervention for young people and their families.

These units consist of an adolescent unit and a child unit each with its own multi-disciplinary team. Both units provide acute short-term hospital admissions for children and young people who may be in crisis, have risk within their presentation, have a level of symptomatology that requires intensive intervention, or benefit from a planned admission to meet complex needs. The unit functions as a tertiary service providing statewide support for admissions. The CYMHS mental health units have strong relationships with key stakeholders including teams within mental health, paediatric and developmental services.

About the Role

This position will provide child and adolescent psychiatry services as Senior Medical Officer to QCH Inpatient Units, though you may be required to undertake other duties as directed by the Medical Director CYMHS, CHQ HHS.  You will therefore be expected to have the knowledge and skills to safely provide a broad range of high level professional and expert clinical psychiatric services to optimise assessment and treatment of children/adolescents and their families across CHQ HHS CYMHS. This position will:

  • Conduct psychiatric assessments of children and adolescents, and their families referred to QCH Inpatient Units
  • Conduct psychiatric reviews of children and adolescents currently engaged with QCH Inpatient Units
  • Availability to conduct second opinions for children and adolescents, as required
  • Manage medication regimes and review physical observations of consumers in collaboration with the child or adolescent's regular GP and/or other treating specialists
  • Medical monitoring of child/adolescents with mental health issues, as required
  • Demonstrate clinical leadership and advocacy for the mental health needs of children, young people, and their carers with relevant agencies state-wide
  • Contribute to the development of clinical practice procedures and protocols for mental health care of children and adolescents for QCH Inpatient Units
  • Other provisions of psychiatric clinical services, as directed by the Medical Director CYMHS
