About the Mackay Hospital and Health Service

The MHHS is a contemporary organisation providing extensive health services in a range of regional, community and rural settings, to a population of around 182,000. Our region covers south to Sarina, west to Clermont, and Bowen and the Whitsunday Islands in the northeast.

The MHHS has 6 hospitals, 2 multi-purpose health services and 4 community health centres that employs more than 3,700 staff. The Mackay Base Hospital is the referral hospital for our region and is one of the most modern healthcare facilities in Queensland.

The MHHS respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land and sea on which we serve our communities, and pay our respect to Elders past, present and emerging. We also declare our commitment to reducing inequalities in health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as we move to a place of equity, justice and partnership together.

About Proserpine Hospital

Proserpine Hospital is a busy Level 3 facility providing essential healthcare services to the Whitsunday region and surrounding communities. Located in the heart of the Whitsundays, the hospital delivers a broad range of inpatient, emergency, maternity, surgical, outpatient and allied health services to a diverse and growing population. The facility supports a strong rural generalist model of care, offering clinicians the opportunity to work across a varied and rewarding scope of practice with a rewarding blend of obstetrics, emergency medicine and inpatient care.

The anaesthetic service at Proserpine Hospital provides:

  • Elective theatre lists (In house and visiting surgeons)
  • Regular pre anaesthetic clinics
  • Emergency anaesthetic care in the ED
  • Anaesthetic services supporting the Maternity Unit at Proserpine Hospital

As a Rural Generalist Anaesthetist, you will play an integral role in delivering safe, patient-centred anaesthetic care in collaboration with experienced nursing staff and multidisciplinary teams. The service provides a rewarding and varied rural anaesthetic practice with a level of clinical activity that supports the consolidation and maintenance of emergency and anaesthetic skills across the full scope of rural generalist practice.

Proserpine Hospital operates a busy 24-hour ED with a volume and acuity well suited to the Rural Generalist scope of practice. The facility is supported by a 24-hour PHO roster, JHOs, interns and medical students, creating a strong team-based environment where education, supervision and mentorship are an important part of the organisational culture.

Opportunities exist to participate in primary care in the area in numerous practices. Procedural and Doctor Stream WIP payments are also accessible as the facility participates in a COAG 19.2 exemption.

The Whitsundays offer an exceptional lifestyle combining coastal living with a strong sense of community.  Rural Generalists working in Proserpine have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a close-knit community while enjoying the unique lifestyle benefits of North Queensland.
