About Mackay Hospital and Health Service

The MHHS is a contemporary organisation providing extensive health services in a range of regional, community and rural settings, to a population of around 182,000 people. Our region covers Sarina in the south, Clermont in the west, and Bowen and the Whitsunday Islands in the northeast, which is an area of approximately 90,000km2.

The MHHS has six hospitals, two multi-purpose health services and four community health centres that employs more than 3,700 staff. The Mackay Base Hospital is the referral hospital for our region and is one of the most modern healthcare facilities in Queensland. It is a state-of-the-art facility equipped with leading edge technology to assist us in providing the highest level of care to our patients and their families

Your Opportunity

Assist the Director in the provision of high-quality clinical services as part of the Department of Emergency Medicine. The role is also involved in the education of medical staff and students, allied health professionals and interested community groups or nursing staff.  Part of the role involves active participation in patient safety, audit, research and service planning activities.

Your Role

  • Varied, exciting case mix including 25% paediatrics & a significant trauma caseload.
  • Regional referral and trauma centre; 50,000 presentations per annum.
  • Support satellite MHHS hospitals and rural sites through advice.
  • Flexile equitable rostering balancing service needs and academic priorities.
  • Provide innovative pre-hospital avoidance models of care through HITH, GEDI and allied community teams.
  • Support services such as Cardiac Cathlab and a 14 bed Short Stay Unit
  • Provide expert clinical services for the department within the Clinical Services Capability Framework for the facility, and within the clinical privileges formally granted to the Staff Specialist/Senior Staff Specialist from time to time.
  • Support the Clinical Director in the medical administration requirements of the department through portfolios.
  • Provide clinical supervision of the department and junior medical staff when rostered as the duty Senior Medical Officer.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) Requirements

It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough).
