Pathology Queensland (PQ) provides diagnostic pathology services to all Hospital and Health Services (HHS) across metro, regional and remote Queensland, offering laboratory services in the disciplines of: anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, haematology, immunology, microbiology and genomics. PQ also provides an invaluable service to Queenslanders by supporting a coordinated response to incidents and disasters.

Abour the role:

As a Scientist in Microbiology, you will assist in the provision of an effective and efficient pathology service to clients of Central Queensland.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Within the Microbiological department you will be required to participate in diagnostic testing, result validation, performing simple to complex duties in the Microbiology/MDU department and follow Pathology Queensland established protocols and standards for which the Laboratory is accredited.
  • Whilst working within the Microbiology/MDU you will be required to have knowledge of plate reading and gram stain, processing of specimens, SARS-CoV-2, Respiratory viruses, various Sexually Transmitted disease testing and Faecal and Urine Pathogen testing.
  • Develop and maintain protocols, standards and procedures within the MDU discipline and suite of tests in accordance with prescribed standards.
  • Provide guidance and train other staff.
  • Perform analyser maintenance and troubleshooting and maintain consumable stocks.
  • Work cooperatively and communicate effectively within the team and with clients, both internal and external to the laboratory producing effective work output and a high quality of service delivery.
  • Build and maintain effective professional relationships with clients and colleagues providing advice and assistance in a professional, friendly and helpful manner.
  • Participate in the identification, development and implementation of quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA / ISO and other accreditation / certification requirements.

Role fit:

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Relevant knowledge, skill and expertise, at a minimum, obtained through relevant tertiary education, but increasing commensurate with experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply scientific judgement in MDU and Microbiology.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, effective interpersonal skills, and the ability to deliver training required in the Microbiology and MDU laboratory.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member, to produce an effective work output in terms of quality and quantity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to comply with organisational policies and procedures, and assist the laboratory to comply with all relevant legislative, administrative, and professional standards including meeting NATA / ISO / TGA accreditation / certification requirements
