Healthcare Ambassador (Inpatient Mental Health)

As a Healthcare Ambassador in our new Adult Mental Health facility, you’ll spend your time engaging with consumers and visitors, building trust and helping create a safer environment for people who may be distressed or vulnerable. You’ll use conversation, empathy, de-escalation and diversion to help someone through a difficult moment, working alongside clinical staff to support positive behaviour and recovery.
You’ll be part of a growing team where being approachable, observant and calm can make a real difference to someone’s experience of care. With full-time and part-time hours available, you can also find an arrangement that fits your work and life.

About us:
Our service is entering an exciting new phase with the opening of a new Adult Inpatient Mental Health Service at Rockhampton Hospital. This state-of-the-art 32-bed facility will expand inpatient care and include high and low dependency units, therapy spaces, administrative support spaces, indoor garden areas and safety and layout features for the wellbeing of consumers and staff.
Working closely with inpatient, community and primary health partners, our multidisciplinary team takes an integrated approach to supporting the recovery and wellbeing of mental health consumers. About the role:
This is a non-traditional security role focused on proactive engagement, communication and preventing situations from escalating.
You'll:
- Proactively engage with patients and visitors to promote a safe, positive and supportive healthcare experience.
- Use trauma-informed communication, verbal de-escalation and diversional strategies to prevent or reduce behaviours of concern.
- Monitor patient behaviour and clinical areas, identify potential concerns early and respond appropriately.
- Work with clinical and multidisciplinary teams to support positive behaviour strategies, recovery-focused care and individual patient needs.
- Provide practical support including activities, resources and way-finding, while using sound judgement, reporting incidents and escalating concerns when required.
About you:
- Strong people and relationship-building skills, with a person-centred approach to supporting others; Experience in healthcare security or customer service will be well regarded
- The ability to communicate clearly, work effectively in a team and make sound decisions in challenging situations.
- Basic negotiation and de-escalation skills, with the ability to respond to difficult situations with empathy and respect.
- An understanding of different cultures, support options and available resources, with a commitment to equity, diversity, respect and inclusion.
- The ability to apply relevant skills, knowledge, standards and procedures gained through training, experience or vocational development.
What we offer:
Total remuneration value of up to $85,592 p.a. is comprised of:
- An hourly rate between $36.09 - $37.83 p.h.
- 12.75% employer superannuation contribution
- 17.5% leave loading
