This newly created part-time Orthoptist position gives you the opportunity to shape the role and help grow the Specialist Outpatients Ophthalmology Service through to June 2027.

You’ll work across adult and paediatric patients, building your clinical skills through varied orthoptic assessment, treatment and screening.

About us:

Ambulatory Services helps patients across the Gladstone region access specialist healthcare, manage ongoing health conditions and receive care closer to home. The service brings together specialist outpatient clinics, cardiac rehabilitation, chronic wound care, diabetes support, Hospital in the Home, hospital avoidance, primary care and geriatric emergency support.

Working alongside multidisciplinary teams, GPs and community providers, the service focuses on early intervention, coordinated care and reducing avoidable hospital admissions and emergency presentations. Through face-to-face, virtual and outreach services, Ambulatory Services helps patients maintain their health, recover safely and receive the right care in the right setting.

About the role:

  • Assess, diagnose and manage ophthalmic conditions across adult and paediatric patients.
  • Deliver a broad range of orthoptic and ophthalmic assessments, treatments and screening.
  • Work collaboratively with Ophthalmologists and the multidisciplinary team to coordinate patient care.
  • Contribute to caseload management, service development and continuous improvement.
  • Support education, supervision, mentoring and professional development of students and staff.

About you:

  • A tertiary qualification in Orthoptics (or equivalent pre-1990 diploma) and registration with the Australian Orthoptic Board; applicants awaiting conferral of qualifications /registration will be considered.
  • Knowledge and practical skills in orthoptic investigations and contemporary ophthalmic equipment.
  • Clinical capability in routine orthoptic services, with paediatric refraction, retinoscopy and cyclo-refraction highly regarded.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with patients, families, carers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • A commitment to professional development, evidence-based practice, continuous learning and quality improvement.

What we offer:

Total monthly remuneration value of up to $8,837 p.m. is comprised of:

  • An hourly rate between $43.97 - $58.59 p.h.
  • 12.75% employer superannuation contribution
  • 17.5% leave loading
