About the Role

This shared placement allows you to work 0.5 FTE with RFDS, providing fly-in-fly-out primary care across some of Queensland's most remote communities, and 0.5 FTE at Normanton Hospital, a rural facility delivering acute, emergency, and inpatient care.

This is a Fixed Term Temporary Full-Time position (commencing February 2026).

This is an exciting opportunity to:

  • Deliver essential healthcare to communities in (MMM) 6–7 locations.
  • Train under experienced rural generalists, senior MOs, and medical educators.
  • Build clinical confidence in both hospital-based and outreach environments.

About the Locations

Mount Isa, home to the Southern Hemisphere's largest rodeo and a vibrant outback community. Enjoy a unique blend of adventure, culture, and unparalleled rural medical opportunities in Queensland's heartland.

Normanton, situated on the Norman River in the Gulf of Carpentaria, is rich in culture and community spirit. The town is home to the Gkuthaarn, Kukatj, and Kurtijar peoples and is known for its fishing, tourism, and stunning outback sunsets. Accommodation is provided during your hospital rotation.

Placement Breakdown

0.5 FTE – Normanton Hospital (based in Normanton):

  • Work in a 14-bed rural hospital providing emergency, inpatient and primary care services.
  • Supported by a multidisciplinary team, including Rural Generalists and SMOs.
  • Free accommodation in Normanton.

0.5 FTE – Royal Flying Doctor Service (based in Mount Isa):

  • Provide fly-in-fly-out GP services to remote towns such as Burketown, Gregory, Bedourie, Boulia, Camooweal and Dajarra.
  • 3–4 days per week in-clinic, 1–2 days for telehealth and admin.
  • All services delivered in MMM 6–7 locations with admin support from the Mount Isa base.
  • Free accommodation in Mount Isa.

Training & Supervision

You'll receive structured education and support, including:

  • Scheduled teaching from RFDS Medical Educators, Base Leads, and senior clinicians.
  • Opportunities for hands-on learning in a diverse and complex clinical environment.
  • Aligned with AGPT standards for extended skills posts in rural and remote medicine.

About You

You're a GP registrar who is passionate about rural medicine, eager to take on new challenges, and ready to make a meaningful impact. You're adaptable, clinically confident, and excited about developing your skills in a one-of-a-kind training environment.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • PGY3+ (RACGP or ACRRM pathway) or Provisional SMO
  • Current AHPRA registration
  • C Class Driver's Licence
  • Willingness to undergo pre-employment checks
  • This is a VPD risk role; immunisation evidence may be required
