The opportunity
The primary responsibility is the provision of epidemiological services to the public health unit and THHS, providing assessment and interpretation of data and expert advice on health surveillance by:
- Undertaking routine chronic and communicable disease epidemiology.
- Initiating, designing, conducting, and reporting on complex population health epidemiology, including investigations of disease clusters, with a high degree of independence
- Evaluation of health interventions and projects,
- Enabling evidence-based public health practice.
- Work collegially and closely with the data management team to provide excellence in health surveillance.
Generous remuneration package value up to $152,775 p.a. comprising:
- Salary rates between $4769.60 - $5132.40 (HP4)
- Annual leave loading + leave
- 12.75% employer superannuation contribution

Townsville Public Health Unit
The Townsville Public Health Unit coordinates and supports national, statewide and local public health responses, as well as undertaking health surveillance and disease-control initiatives. The unit focuses on the health and wellbeing of populations, as opposed to individuals, with key objectives being protecting public health and preventing disease and illness.
Role requirements
- The successful applicant must hold a tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification in:
- Science or Health Science (major in Epidemiology or Biostatistics) or
- Bachelor of Public Health (major in Epidemiology) or
- Postgraduate degree in epidemiology
- Desirable qualifications: To meet the competencies required for this position, it is highly desirable that applicants have a masters or doctorate degree in epidemiology or biostatistics related to health, or equivalent.
- Note: For establishment management purposes under Schedule 2 of the Health Practitioner Enterprise Agreement (2015) this position is deemed to be of the discipline Epidemiologist.
- Drivers Licence: This position may require the incumbent to operate a ‘C' Class Drivers Licence. An appropriate licence endorsement to operate this type of vehicle is required. Proof of this endorsement must be provided before commencement of duty.
