The Director has a critical role in supporting the Ombudsman and Inspector of Detention Services to carry out functions under the Inspector of Detention Services (IDS) Act. The work is focused on promoting and upholding the humane treatment of
detainees, including humane conditions of their detention, and preventing detainees from being subject to harm, including torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. The Director establishes and manages teams responsible for inspecting places of detention (including
youth detention centres, prisons, and watch-houses). The Director will take a lead role in overseeing the preparation of inspection reports, by Principal Inspection Officers, for tabling in parliament. The Director is responsible for ensuring team members understand and work towards achieving the Office’s strategic direction and statutory responsibilities.
