This Ranger/Vessel Master roles focus area is to operate and maintain Departmental vessels and associated equipment as well as to assist in marine, island and coastal protected area management including in water activities. As a member of a team, this position will be aligned to the annual operations of the 24m long-range patrol vessel “Reef Resilience” and will include patrols for extended periods up to 15 days at a time, totalling up to 130 days at sea per annum. The holder of this position must have the minimum of a Master Class <24m NC and Marine Engine Drivers II NC. Experience on similar sized vessels to the “Reef Resilience” is highly desirable. In addition, this role will also assist in the operation and maintenance of the departments’ short/mid-range patrol vessels such as a 10.5m RIB and 12m landing barge.

Travel to other locations may be required at various times, which may include overnight stays. Rangers work on a roster basis which at times can include weekend work.

The focus area of these roles is the successful implementation of the Compliance Program of the Reef Joint Field Management Program (RJFMP). The RJFMP is staffed by both Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service & Partnerships (QPWS&P) and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) staff. These positions will be embedded in GBRMPA's Field Operations Team (FOT) and report to their respective Team Leaders on a day-to-day basis. The positions also report to their respective QPWS&P supervisors (Senior Rangers (Compliance) for administrative and longer-term planning purposes.
The FOT Teams in which the positions will be embedded are responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of surveillance of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (GBRWHA), and regular planning, patrolling, and reporting is the primary function of the roles.
